FAQ

Pool

Why is my pool cloudy?

There can be several reasons why your water is cloudy. The main reasons are low sanitizer level, high pH level, inadequate circulation or filtration, not running the filtration equipment all day or leaving the pool covered after adding an adjustment of water balance chemical or shock.

Is water balance something I really need to be concerned with in my pool?

YES! Water balance has 3 main factors, pH, Total Alkalinity and Calcium Hardness. Improper water balance can lead to skin/eye irritation, equipment corrosion and stain & scaling of pool surfaces and equipment. Manufacturers may not warrant their product (liners, heaters) if proper water balance has not been maintained.

How do I prevent algae from occurring in my pool?

You will need to ensure that a) there is an adequate sanitizer level in your pool (24 PPM) b) a weekly maintenance dose of algaecide and c) ensure proper water balance.

How often should I change my filter sand? Is it possible to clean the sand without removing it from the filter?

Filter sand should be changed every 5-6 years if seasonal cleaning is not occurring. The old filter sand is scooped out and replaced with clean filter sand. Pool water clarity problems can often be caused by old, dirty filter sand. Filter sand can also be cleaned at the end of each pool season by adding a filter cleaner to the sand, letting it soak for 12 hours with the pump off, then backwashing thoroughly.

What can you tell me about liquid solar blankets? How effective are they?

This product is called a “liquid evaporation inhibitor. A package containing the nontoxic liquid is simply snipped open and dropped into the pool water. It releases a liquid which creates an invisible layer, preventing evaporation, 24 hrs a day. Evaporation accounts for 90% of heat loss from a pool. These liquid solar blankets last about I month and are simply replaced with a new package.

Spa

Is water balance really something I need to be concerned with in my Hot Tub?

YES! Water balance has 3 main factors, pH, Total Alkalinity and Calcium Hardness Increaser. Improper water balance can lead to skin/eye irritation, equipment corrosion and staining & scaling of the surface and equipment of the tub. Manufacturers may not warrant their product if proper water balance has not been maintained.

Why does the water look dull or cloudy?

There can be several reasons for dull or cloudy water. The most common ones are low sanitizer levels (Bromine or Chlorine), poor filtration or circulation, or high pH& Alkalinity. High bather load with a low sanitizer level is the most common answer.

Why is it necessary to shock my Hot Tub?

Shocking is a treatment for quickly cleaning and super sanitizing the water. Irritating wastes such as perspiration, make-up, body lotion etc. cannot be removed by the spa filter. The resulting waste build up reduces the power of sanitizers, making the water dull, cloudy and irritating to the eyes and skin. There are shock treatments for both Bromine and Chlorine systems. Bacteria cannot be filtered out through the cartridge filter because of its microscopic size. It must be removed through an oxidizing shock treatment of the spa water.

Why do I have to leave the cover off the hot tub when I shock?

Shocking the water breaks apart the sanitizer (bromine or chlorine) from the bacteria. The bacteria is turned into a gas and is oxidized into the air. If you leave the cover on, this gas cannot escape causing it to reenter the water. Regular shocking keeps the water clear and eliminates odour.

How often do I have to change the water in my tub?

Rule of thumb is three months, but every tub is different. There is a test called TDS (Total Dissolved Solids). When the spa water becomes too saturated with product the chemical reactions become sluggish and the water can be dull, foamy and often cloudy. You may notice that you are using more sanitizer then usual and are getting no results.
